Susan Moonsie: Prince's "Teenage Lolita"

Susan Moonsie

Susan Moonsie was a member of Vanity 6, which was a R&B trio formed in 1982 by the musician Prince. Per Wikipedia, although she was 18 when she joined Vanity 6, Moonsie claimed that she was 16, and Prince gave her a "teenage Lolita" image. However, Moonsie was 16 when she began a sexual relationship with Prince.

Vanity (Denise Matthews) and Brenda Bennett were the two other members of the trio. Interestingly, a January 24, 1983 Jet cover story described Vanity as: "The 19-year-old, who seems very mature for her years [...]" when in fact Vanity was 24. Sex and the allure of nymphets sells.

The Jet article, that described the trio as provocative, sexually explicit, and who "[...] often goes on stage in no more than a slinky silk camisole and leather boots," related:

Susan grew up in Minneapolis and by the time she was 12, she was already writing songs that expressed the things she wanted to do as an adult. During a chance meeting with Prince in a local disco, she showed him some of her handiwork.

"He was just standing there drinking orange juice and we started talking. I told him that I write songs, then gave him a sample of my lyrics:

'Ooh, look at me. I'm a Cadillac. I'm a brand new convertible child, I've never been driven. You're the first. Come on baby; drive me wild.'" (emphasis added)

"Nasty Girl" was the groups most popular song. Despite its explicit lyrics that were purportedly performed by teens, the song reached number 1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot Dance Club Play and the U.S. Billboard Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles. Here are the lyrics (emphasis added):

[Verse 1]
That's right, pleased to meet you
I still won't tell you my name
Don't you believe in mystery
Don't you want to play my game
I'm lookin' for a man to love me
Like I've never been loved before
I'm lookin' for a man that'll do it anywhere

Even on a limousine floor 'cause

[Chorus]
Tonight i'm livin' in a fantasy
My own little nasty world
Tonight, don't you wanna come with me
Do you think i'm a nasty girl
Tonight, I'm livin' in a fantasy
My own little nasty world
Tonight, don't you want to come with me

Do you think I'm a nasty girl

[Verse 2]
I guess I'm just used to sailors
I think they got water on the brain
I think they got more water upstairs
Than they got sugar on a candy cane
That's right, it's been a long time
Since I had a man that did it real good
If you ain't scared, take it out

I'll do it like a real live nasty girl should

[Chorus]
Tonight I'm livin in a fantasy world
My own little nasty world
Tonight, don't you want to come with me
Do you think I'm a nasty girl
Tonight I'm livin' in a fantasy
My own little nasty world
Tonight, don't you want to come with me
Do you think i'm a nasty girl
Tonight I'm livin in a fantasy world
My own little nasty world
Tonight, don't you want to come with me
Do you think I'm a nasty girl
Tonight I'm livin' in a fantasy
My own little nasty world
Tonight, don't you want to come with me

Do you think i'm a nasty girl

[Bridge]
Please, please
Please, please
Nasty girl (nasty girl)
Do you think I'm a nasty girl
Nasty girl (nasty girl)
Do you think I'm a nasty girl
Nasty girl (nasty girl)
Do you think I'm a nasty girl
Nasty girl (nasty girl)
Do you think I'm a nasty girl
Oh (do you think I'm a nasty girl)
Oh (nasty girl)
Nasty girl (nasty girl)
Do you think I'm a nasty girl

Oh

[Spoken Interlude]
I don't like this groove
Try and give me something I can croon to
Catch my drift?

That'll work

[Instrumental Break]

[Spoken Interlude]
That's right, I can't control it
I need seven inches or more
Tonight, I can no longer hold it

Get it up, get it up, I can't wait anymore

[Outro]
Uh, it's time to jam
Dance nasty girls, dance
Everybody, uh, it's time to jam
Nasty girls, dance, dance, dance (Yeah)
Everybody, uh, it's time to jam
Nasty girls, dance, dance, dance
Uh, it's time to jam
Nasty girls, dance, dance, dance
Uh, it's time to jam
Nasty girls, dance, dance, dance
Uh, it's time to jam
Nasty girls, dance, dance, dance
Uh, it's time to jam
Nasty girls, dance, dance, dance
Uh, it's time to jam

Nasty girls, dance, dance, dance
