AFTER THE HUNT (2025): Alma's (Julia Roberts) Affair with Father's Best Friend

Here’s IMDb’s synopsis for After the Hunt (2025):

A [Yale] college professor (Alma Imhoff [Julia Roberts]) finds herself at a personal and professional crossroads when a star pupil (Maggie [Ayo Edebiri]) levels an accusation against one of her colleagues (Hank [Andrew Garfield]) and a dark secret from her own past threatens to come to light.

To elaborate a bit, Maggie, a PhD student, accused Frank, a Yale professor, of sexual assault. Frank confessed that he flirted with students, but he claimed that he never had sex with a student. Alma was apprehensive about supporting Maggie, but not because Alma supported Frank. Alma didn’t support Maggie due to a “dark secret”, which was that when Alma was 15-years-old, she falsely accused her father’s best friend and co-worker of statutory rape. 

In addition to confessing to her husband that she lied about being sexually assaulted by her father’s best friend, Alma shared that she and her father’s best friend were actually in love. 

Alma, “I wanna share something with you.I told you when I was a child that my father's best friend sexually assaulted me, abused me. None of that is true. We were in love.”

Alma described her father’s best friend as kind and handsome. So much so that she would stare at him and stalk him. And he was the center of her attention and her reality.

Alma, “He was so kind, he was so handsome, I could just stare at him from across rooms. I would go to work sometimes with my father, just so I could see him. I couldn't focus in class, school, my friends, just everything felt so pedestrian, except for him. He was the only thing that felt real to me."

Shortly after her 15th birthday, Alma was kissed by her father’s best friend, and six months later, at Alma’s insistence, they had age-gap sex, which resulted in that time period being the “happiest time” in Alma’s life. 

Alma, “He kissed me for the first time the day after my 15th birthday [...] Six months later, maybe. He said I was too young, but I had insisted. It was the happiest time of my life."

However, her father’s best friend suddenly ended their age-gap affair and started openly dating someone “more appropriate”, which Alma referred to as “cruel”, because she was crushed. Consequently, to get revenge, she reported him for (statutory) rape. Although she eventually retracted her accusation, he committed suicide. 

Alma, “Then out of nowhere, he said that he met someone else and someone that was more appropriate. He started bringing her to my parents' parties and throwing her in my face like he was trying to prove how little he cared. It was so cruel. So I made up a story that I knew would hurt him the most. And three years later, he committed suicide. I had already retracted the story by then, but it didn't matter. I'd wanted to hurt him the way I thought he'd hurt me, and I did.”

In an attempt to console Alma, Frederik, Alma’s husband, reminded her that she was very young. Very interestingly, Frank said that “all young girls” have adult-like desires, but that it was the responsibility of adults to resist satisfying those innocent desires. 

Frederik, “Alma, you were very young. All young girls want adult things to happen to them. Sooner than they're ready for them all the time, but it's always the adult's job to protect the innocence of a child."

Alma responded to her husband by reminding him that, initially, her father’s best friend rejected and refused her sexual advances but that she didn’t give him a choice and insisted that they have an age-gap affair.

Alma, “No, I didn't give him a choice.”

Frederik, “There's always a choice. It doesn't matter if you wanted him. It doesn't matter if you threw yourself at him. He should have rejected you outright.”

Alma, “No, he did. He did. He refused me.”

Alma confessed that she destroyed a good man with a lie, but her husband replied that it was not a lie, because the truth was that she was underage, but Alma retorted that the truth was that she’s (still) in love with her father’s best friend. 

Alma, “He was a good man, and I destroyed him with a lie.”

Frederik, Alma, it wasn't a lie. You keep thinking he did nothing wrong. You keep blaming yourself. Do you think you can allow yourself to see the truth in that?

Alma, “The truth is that I love him.” 

Interestingly, Frederik put all the blame on the best friend for the illicit affair, and Alma blamed herself, but, some would argue that, in reality, the best friend and Alma were to blame.

From the NY Times to Podcasts and A-List Celebrities: Schoolgirl Sleepover Sex?!

Back in 2022, we wrote about the New York Times Magazine THE ETHICIST piece “My Daughter Is Having Sex With Her Best Friend. Must I Tell Her Mom?” (March 22, 2022) The piece is about a mother who needs advice, because her teen daughter is having girl-on-girl sex during sleepovers with her best friend.

Here's part of the question submitted to THE ETHICIST:

My daughter is in a newly romantic relationship with her best friend, who is also female. Both are in their midteens. My daughter recently confided in me that they have had sex. She insists, however, that I am not allowed to tell the friend’s mother, because the mother wouldn’t let them have sleepovers or hang out as much. My ex-husband is the one who hosts the sleepovers, and he looks the other way when they are in the bedroom, reasoning that (or so my daughter tells me), “It’s OK because there are no penises involved.” [...] Are my ex-husband’s actions egregious? Name Withheld

We decided to revisit the New York Times piece after we listened to the “My First Time (with a woman)” episode of the Becca Moore podcast. On the podcast, Moore shared that during middle school sleepovers, she and her friends would “sit in a circle and all make out with each other.” Moore shared:

Like, honestly, in middle school we used to, like, sit in a circle and all make out with each other. And no boys would be around. I don't really know why we were doing that, but I did love those sleepovers. That was fun.

By high school, Moore and her girls were still making out, but by high school boys were present during the sleepovers. Consequently, the making out wasn’t for pleasure anymore but for entertainment. Moore shared:

And then when I got to high school, we would have sleepovers and make out, like, play spin the bottle but boys would be there. And it was kind of, like, a little bit, I will say, the high school one, was a little bit performative.

I think that we were not really, like, turned on. We were only doing it because boys were watching, and I think we thought that it was hot for them to watch - at least from my perspective. I think I was more so thinking about the boys and than the girls.

Miley Cyrus (13)

Speaking of middle-school girl-on-girl sex and podcasts, Miley Cyrus shared with Alex Cooper on the Call Her Daddy podcast (August 13, 2020) that when Cyrus was a pre-teen she had a girl-on-girl orgy, which Cooper referred to as “amazing”.

Jessica Simpson (13) 

Jessica Simpson shared in her memoir, Open Book, that she had pre-teen girl-on-girl sex, from the age of 6 to 12, with a family friend. Of course, the sex happened during sleepovers. Simpson wrote:

It would start with tickling my back [...]

Eventually it wasn't just at nighttime. She would get me to go into a closet with her, or just find a way to linger until we were alone. It got to the point that she would sneak into the bathroom to watch me shower.

In addition, Simpson confessed to People that she was “very shameful”, because she initiated girl-on-girl sex during sleepovers with her family friend as well:

“I allowed it to happen, so I felt that I was as much of the abuser as the abused. So I was very shameful during that time, from 6 to 12 years old.”

Nancy Friday's My Secret Garden: Women’s Sexual Fantasies (Trident Press, 1973) is an international bestselling “groundbreaking” collection of women's fantasies. (Interestingly, Friday’s husband was Norman Pearlstein - the editor-in-chief of Time, Inc.) In the book, several women shared their middle school girl-on-girl sexual escapes during sleepovers.

Clarissa shared that she remembers when she and her friend were caught masturbating with candles when they were 12.

Marina began to be aware of men at the age of 9 or 10 and thought about them while she masturbated; however, Marina only had "a vague idea of what lovemaking was" until she met her friend, a 10-year-old Mediterranean girl. Marina and the Mediterranean nymphet used to sit at opposite ends of the bathtub and pour warm water from a Russian silver teapot all over their clitorises while caressing their bodies "with infallible, instinctive verve."

Celia shared that when she was about 8, she used to bully her: "[...] friend into playing games where we had to pretend to take off our clothes and the 'wicked man' would make us walk in the street [...]" In addition, Celia confessed that when she was 10, she wanted to be a stripper and that she had "intimate contact" with her girlfriend.

And when Alison was 14, she had an "[...] unusual relationship with a close girlfriend." For example, Alison's girlfriend would dress her in a sexy bikini made of chiffon scarves, before she pretended that she was a "rowdy seaman" and raped Allison.

Of course, pre-teen girl-on-girl sex is restricted to sleepovers. For example, Liara Roux shared in her memoir, Whore of New York: A Confession (Repeater Books, 2021), that she had pre-teen girl-on-girl sex with the "very beautiful" Melissa. In the 5th grade. Outdoors. In the woods. During a youth retreat. In the Catskills. Roux wrote:

One day, when we were walking to whatever activity was next, she asked me if I wanted to skip it [...] As we got further away from the camp, she stepped off the trail. I followed her. We wandered through the trees, and I tripped over a rock hidden under the snow.

We got to a clearing and she plopped on the ground, then started making a snow angel. “What about your pants?” I asked. “Won’t they get wet?” [...] “They already are.” I blushed at the implication. Seeing my flushed face, she stood up, walked to me, and kissed me [...] I couldn’t hold myself back. I kissed her, putting my hands around her neck, pulling her in.

[...] I pressed myself against her and we fell in the snow [...] I rolled on top of her, kissed her again [...] She wiggled, unzipping her coat, unzipping mine, and our hands were on each other’s chests, grasping at softness. I kissed her neck; she moaned and put my breast in her mouth [...] After much maneuvering, she pulled off her glove and stuck her hand down my pants. The chill of her fingertips pressing into me.

We walked back to camp, our faces flushed.

Unsurprisingly, pre-teen girl-on-girl sex isn’t limited to nonfiction. For example, in Lolita, Lolita confessed to Humbert Humbert that she had pre-teen “sapphic diversions” with Elizabeth Talbot - Lolita’s tent-mate at summer camp. Nabokov wrote:

Her astounding tale started with an introductory mention of her tent-mate of the previous summer, at another camp, a “very select” one as she put it. That tent-mate (“quite a derelict character,” “half-crazy,” but a “swell kid”) instructed her in various manipulations. At first, loyal Lo refused to tell me her name.

“Well,” she said. “[...] her name was Elizabeth Talbot, she goes now to a swanky private school, her father is an executive.”

I recalled with a funny pang the frequency with which poor Charlotte [Lolita’s mother] used to introduce into party chat such elegant tidbits as “when my daughter was out hiking last year with the Talbot girl.”

I wanted to know if either mother learned of those sapphic diversions?

“Gosh no,” exhaled limp Lo mimicking dread and relief, pressing a falsely fluttering hand to her chest.

And most recently in the film Miller’s Girl (2024), that was written and directed by a woman, Cairo (Jenna Ortega) and Winnie decided to sext Mr. Fillmore - their high school’s physics teacher and baseball coach.

In the sext, the schoolgirls are engaged in girl-on-girl kissing, which, per Winnie, is what all girls do when they’re alone at night. 

Cairo said to Winnie, “You should tell him [via sext] you’re with me. And that we’re doing what all girls do when they’re alone at night.”

Mr. Fillmore texted: And what might that be?

Cairo said to Winnie, “[Tell him] [w]e are measuring the depths of our sexuality within the safe confines of our friendship.”

Lastly, the naive (e.g., feminists) would have you believe that (pre) teens engaged in girl-on-girl sex is the sole idea of dirty old men (i.e., porn directors and authors of sleaze), but clearly that’s not the case. And we won’t even (fully) mention the news reports that report that it’s not uncommon for girls to livestream their sleepovers. For example, Alexandra S. Levine posted on Forbes "How TikTok Live Became ‘A Strip Club Filled With 15-Year-Olds’" (Apr 27, 2022). As Moore said, schoolgirls consider it hot for males to watch. In addition, per Levine, teen girls do it for likes, followers and gifts.

Teen Melissa Gilbert (15) and Dean Butler (23): An Age-Gap Romance on the Prairie

Page Six posted that: “Melissa Gilbert’s mom ruined teen’s first on-screen kiss with 23-year-old actor by sobbing: New book” (June 21, 2024)

In the post, Nicki Gostin reported that 15-year-old Melissa Gilbert, whom played Laura “Half-Pint” Ingalls on Little House on the Prairie, had her first age-gap kiss with 23-year-old actor Dean Butler whom played Almanzo Wilder.

This kiss happened on episode “Sweet Sixteen” (s06e22) where, after Butler said lovingly, “Sweet Sixteen”, Gilbert leaned in for the kiss.

And on the very next episode, “He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not” (s06e23), after Butler informed Gilbert’s character, “I want you to be my wife,” and Gilbert replied, “I’d love to,” they kissed again. (Note: There’s no word on how many takes the scenes took.)

Consequently, per Butler’s book, Prairie Man: My Little House Life & Beyond, Barbara Abeles, Gilbert’s mother, “loudly wept” and “[...] Michael Landon, the show’s star as well as its writer and director, had to yell ‘cut.’”

Gostin related that, unsurprisingly, Gilbert’s Jewish mother didn’t approve of Butler’s casting, because Gilbert: “[...] had just turned 15.” And Butler wrote that Abeles’: “[...] unhappiness culminated, perhaps, in not being able to bear seeing me kiss her daughter. It was a protective displeasure.”

Of their on-screen age-gap relationship, which eventually became an on-screen age-gap marriage, Butler shared that Gilbert said, “You were a man, a grown-up man with a car and an apartment. I was a really young teenager [...] I wasn’t allowed to shave my legs and I’d never even been on a date.” [Emphasis added]

Gilbert wrote about the age-gap affair in Prairie Tale, her memoir, where she titled the chapter “Oh Shit, They Got a Real Man!”. Of season 6, Gilbert wrote that even though she was a  “flat-chested fifteen-year-old who looked thirteen”, she knew that she was: “[...] going to have to show affection, kiss, and at some point go to bed with a guy [...]”

“I knew I was going to have to show affection, kiss, and at some point go to bed with a guy when in real life I was a knock-kneed, flat-chested fifteen-year-old who looked thirteen, still wore rubber bands and a retainer in her mouth, and had never gone out with, kissed, or even held hands with a boy.” [Emphasis added]

Gilbert wrote that she was “excited about the idea” and that she was “definitely excited to see who the producers chose for this all-important role [...]”, and when she found out that Dean Butler had been cast, she was: “[...] freaked out a little from nerves, but in a good way.”

In addition, Gilbert reiterated that Butler was a “grown-up man” whom “[...] shaved, drove a car, and lived in his own apartment.” Interestingly, Gilbert naively opined that she feared that Butler would be “bummed”, inconvenienced, and disappointed by the prospect of having an (on-screen) affair with a 15-year-old nymphet.

“That’s right, Dean [Butler] was a grown-up man. I looked at him as if he’d risen from Dr. Frankenstein’s lab. He was in his twenties. He shaved, drove a car, and lived in his own apartment. He must have felt so bummed upon meeting this dorky, freaked-out fifteen-year-old with peach fuzz all over her legs (I hadn’t even shaved them yet), and being told I was the one he had to fall in love with and marry. How inconvenient and disappointing for him.”

Interestingly, Gilbert wrote: “I didn’t want to kiss a man. I didn’t want to kiss anyone with stubble!” And she added: “When the time came to kiss Dean, I shut my eyes (inside, they were blank screens) and gently puckered up, letting him find the target.” 

However, a viewing of the scene revealed that Gilbert initiated the kiss. In the scene, Gilbert kept her eyes open as she stared lovingly into Butler's eyes, she leaned in as her eyes darted from Butler’s lips to his eyes, and then she closed her eyes, as most humans do - regardless of age, as they kissed. 

Of the on-screen age-gap romance, Gilbert wrote: “This was the real beginning of Laura and Almanzo’s romance, which was one of the great romances of all time.”

In response to the age-gap kiss, recall that Butler wrote that Gilbert’s mother “loudly wept”, which caused the director to yell ‘cut’, but Gilbert wrote in her memoir that after the kiss, she turned and saw her mother: “[...] standing just off camera, smiling with tears in her eyes.” In other words, crying all the way to the bank.

Lastly, recall that Gilbert related that prior to kissing Butler, she confessed that she had “never even been on a date” and that she had “never gone out with, kissed, or even held hands with a boy.” However, in a seeming contradiction, which is typical of (age-gap) memoirs, Gilbert shared that she had a “budding romance” with Micheal Landon Jr., which: “[...] hadn’t been contrived for PR purposes like so many teen romances in Hollywood.” And in fact, Gilbert’s kiss with Butler was not her first on-screen kiss. She related that she had been “[...] kissed years earlier in another episode, but it had been an innocent little peck. This was Laura’s first real kiss, one she desired [...]” [Emphasis added]

WILD THINGS (1998): High School Girls and Guidance Counselor's Throuple

On the “90s Lolitas Volume 3: Wild Things [...] (Erotic 90’s, Part 19)” episode of the You Must Remember This podcast (October 9, 2023), Karina Longworth recapped Wild Things (1998), which we’ll partially relate with some added comments. 

Longworth narrated:

Columbia Pictures, a legacy Hollywood studio, released a movie about high school students having sex with an adult staff member at their school.  Released in March 1998 [...] Wild Things was a minor hit, grossing $30 million domestically on a $20 million budget. [Per the film’s Wikipedia page, the film made over $30 million internationally too.]

The adult staff member Longworth referenced was Mr. Sam Lombardo (Matt Dillon), the guidance counselor and sailing coach at Florida’s Blue Bay High School, who was having sexual affairs with Kelly Van Ryan (Denise Richards) and Suzie Toller (Neve Campbell) - two nubile 18-year-old school girls. 

Longworth narrated:

The action of the film starts when sultry rich girl Kelly Van Ryan, played by Denise  Richards, tells [...] that the guidance counselor Sam raped her. Shortly thereafter Neve Campbell’s Susie, a goth burnout with a bad dye job who lives in a trailer, tells the cops [...]  that she was raped by the guidance counselor, too. Both girls recall  that their older assailant couldn’t finish the sex act, and negged them with a strange comment, the same but for one word. 

In terms of the neg, Suzie shared with the police that Mr. Lombardo said, “No little bitch can ever make me cum.” And Kelly told the police, “He said, ‘[...] no little girl can ever make me cum.’”

However, later in the film, while having (consensual) sex Mr. Lombardo, Kelly requested, “Say you love me.” Mr. Lombardo replied and demanded, “I love you. Now give me the line.” Kelly said, “No little girl can ever make me cum,” which turned out to not be true, because Kelly kindly reminded Mr. Lombardo that she was able to make him have an orgasm at the glades. 

And speaking of age-gap love, Suzie related that Kelly was “in love” with Mr. Lombardo and that he had been her “fantasy”.”

In a plot twist à la Priscilla Cummings’ What Mr. Mattero Did (Penguin Young Readers Group), Susie confessed that she and Kelly lied about being raped by Mr. Lombardo. Longworth narrated:

The case goes to trial [...] On cross examination, Susie’s story falls apart, and she admits that she and Kelly made up their accusations of rape. Kelly’s mom is then forced to pay Sam a hefty settlement, by liquidating a trust fund that her daughter was due to receive on the mom’s death. 

In What Mr. Mattero Did, three seventh-graders, Jenna, Suzanne and Claire, falsely informed their middle school principal that Mr. Mattero, the music teacher, had molested them. But why did Susie and Kelly falsely accuse Mr. Lombardo of rape? Longworth narrated:

Why would these teenagers make this up? The first “twist” of Wild Things comes after  this settlement, when Sam, Kelly and Susie meet in a motel room and reveal that they  were all in on it together, and they’re all expecting to share the $8.5 million payout Sam  received from Kelly’s mom. 

Before splitting the $8.5 million three ways, the age-gap throuple had a three-way. Interestingly, Kelly arrived at the rendezvous dressed like a nubile nymphet in a pleated school girl (mini) skirt, a white cotton top, and a pair of bobby socks under her Mary Janes. Why did John McNaughton, the director, and the costume designer decide to dress Denise Richards’ character that way? Per Longworth, the intention behind putting Kelly in “clothing and accessories associated with childhood” was to make Kelly look like Lolita. 

The trio celebrate with sex, and though the ensuing threesome scene [...] there are a couple of images in it that seem worth noting. Kelly wears a  pleated skirt, mary janes and bobby socks à la Lolita to this threesome, and McNaughton includes a seemingly straight-faced shot of her panties being removed from under the skirt while the socks and shoes stay on. We know by this point that the character is 18 [...] in costuming  the character as a schoolgirl the filmmakers seem to want you to imagine that she’s  younger. In that sense they got what they wanted. 

It is legally permissible for adults to have or imagine having sex with people who are over the age of 18, but when the sexualisation of those of-age women is comprised of clothing and accessories associated with childhood, does it really matter that the women are months beyond their 18th birthday? 

Connectedly, Longworth referenced “Schoolgirls Make Alligators Look Like Ingenues” (March 20, 1998) - Janet Maslin’s New York Times review of the film where Maslin wrote that Blue Bay High School had a “well-developed Lolita squad” with Kelly as the high school’s “vixenish” “nymphet extraordinaire”.

As typical for a  film with an age-gap theme or motif, Wild Things had Kelly and Suzie participate in multiple girl-on-girl scenes. For example, during the three-way in the motel room with Mr. Sam Lombardo, Kelly and Suzie kissed, and later in the film the school girls kissed and undressed - in a swimming pool. Longworth narrated: 

The porniest shot in the scene features a still-clothed Campbell pouring champagne on Richards’s naked breasts, in an image that feels very Showgirls-esque.

Another sex  scene, between Richards and Campbell, recalls Showgirls again–in its girl-on-girl  coupling, its over-the-top emotion and violence, and its setting in a swimming pool.

Interestingly, Longworth related that Roger Ebert, in his three-stars out of five review of the film, wrote that Denise Richards’ sex scene was: “[...] either gratuitous or indispensable [i.e., absolutely necessary] depending on your point of view.”  

Speaking of gratuitous (off camera) sex scenes, Kelly said that Mr. Lombardo fingered her - anally. She said, “[…] his hands were in my shorts. You know? From behind. His fingers. His fingers. They were in me. Both places. You know?” And while admiring a photograph that she had of Mr. Lombardo and Kelly having sex, Suzie said to Mr. Lombardo, “I can’t decide what came out better. That little straw up Kelly’s nose or that dildo shoved up her ass.”

Not to be outdone, Neve Campbell’s character was lauded too. Danielle Gibson wrote in her Glamour piece “Hear Me Out: Wild Things Is Surprisingly Feminist” (March 19, 2016) that: 

“Spoiled Floridian princess Kelly (Denise Richards) and drug-addled swamp priestess Suzie (Neve Campbell) are two of the most well-rounded, fascinating, and exciting characters to ever grace the screen.” Ever?

I won’t share the rest of the film’s shocking spoilers, but I will share Longworth’s shocking assertion that: “[...] few actual teenagers have the adult bodies of a Denise Richards or Sarah Michelle Gellar, let alone the self-possession and sexual maturity of the characters they played on screen.” Longworth narrated:

What was potentially dangerous about depicting teens having wild sex lives in these  movies [...] was that they sold the idea that 16-year-olds are essentially adults, when there is in fact a wide range of rates of development, and few actual teenagers have the adult bodies of a Denise Richards or Sarah Michelle Gellar, let alone the self-possession and sexual maturity of the characters they played on screen.  

I would imagine that Longworth read Less Than Zero, but maybe she opined that that’s fiction with an unreliable narrator. Or maybe Longworth hasn’t read Restless Virgins: Love, Sex, and Survival in Prep School or Female Chauvinist Pigs: Women and the Rise of [Teen] Raunch Culture or even American Girls: Social Media and the Secret Lives of Teenagers. But Longworth must have known about Sami Sheen, Denise Richards’s daughter, who started an OnlyFans account when she was 18-years-old.
