The Courtney Stodden (17), Doug Hutchison (52) and 'Seinfeld' Star (53) Age-Gap Scandal

Below is Courtney Stodden and Doug Hutchison’s age-gap relationship timeline that’s partially based on an A&E report.

January 2011: Courtney Stodden Meets Doug Hutchison

In 20211, 16-year-old Courtney Stodden, a pageant contestant, model, and aspiring singer, enrolled in 50-year-old Doug Hutchison’s online acting workshop. (Doug is arguably best known for his roles on The X-Files and Lost.) Subsequently, after class, Courtney and Doug began exchanging flirtatious emails.

Due to Courtney’s age, Krista Keller, Courtney’s mother, monitored the emails, which she told The Daily Beast were "beautiful, loving, [and] nonsexual." However, Doug didn’t realize that Courtney was a teen, and when he found out, he shared with ABC News that the news caused a "struggle" in his heart, because he had "already started falling for her."

May 20, 2011: Courtney Stodden and Doug Hutchison Get Married

Per A&E, Courtney’s mother said that Doug: “offered to step away from Stodden until she was 18, but Keller suggested that they should just get married instead.” Courtney’s mother opined that her daughter, despite his age, had “real love” with Doug. In addition, Courtney’s mother knew that due her daughter’s “sexuality and because of the attention she gets” no regular man could handle her daughter. Courtney’s mother said,
"Even though she was just 16, I knew it was going to take a pretty big man to handle her because of her sexuality and because of the attention she gets."
Consequently, 16-year-old Courtney and 51-year-old Doug got married in Las Vegas, and the age-gap couple honeymooned at the Chateau Marmont in Hollywood.

2012–2013: Couples Therapy, and The Donny Clay Show with Courtney Stodden

Courtney and Doug appeared on VH1's Couples Therapy with Dr. Jenn Berman. Per A&E “([...] the fact that Stodden wasn't even 18 yet) caused a lot of tension both within the cast” ; however, Dr. Berman informed Access Hollywood that in her professional opinion “she didn't see [Doug] Hutchison as a predator.”

In the promotional interview for Couples Therapy with Billy Bush, Doug mentioned that his age-gap relationship with Courtney was modeled after John and Bo Derek, whom I wrote about in The Allure of Nymphets, where I related that Bo had to avoid being prosecuted for statutory rape after he bedded the 16-year-old future 10 star by fleeing the country to Germany until Bo turned 18. Doug mentioned in the interview that John and Bo were married for 22 years and that Bo held John's hand on his deathbed.

I was shocked by Billy Bush's defensive, harsh, and antagonistic attitude towards Doug during the Couples Therapy segment. Not once did Billy praise Doug for getting Courtney's parents’ blessing and for waiting to have sex with Courtney until after they were married. However, Billy only chuckled during ”Grab ’em by the Pussy” Gate.

In addition, Doug mentioned the age-gap relationship between Celine Dion and René Angélil. Doug related that 38-year-old René met Celine when she was 12. René and Celine began a(n) (open) relationship when Celine was 20. And they eventually wed and were married for over 20 years until René’s death.

During the Couples Therapy segment, Courtney shared with Billy that, despite being 16, she knew what she wanted and that Doug, despite being 51, was the love of her life. Coutney shared:
“I knew what I wanted [...] I wanted to save myself until I was married [...] That meant so much to me that I found the love of my life. I married him at 16. I knew what I wanted.”

In 2012, Courtney and Doug appeared on Funny or Die’s “The Donny Clay Show with Courtney Stodden”. On the episode, while Doug looked on encouragingly, Courtney posed in a red bikini while Donny Clay (Jason Alexander) examined her 17-year-old breasts with a mobile phone.

Recently, Courtney posted on Instagram (July 20, 2026) that, in hindsight, it’s “impossible” for her to understand how Jason Alexander was allowed to “repeatedly” rub his phone across her teen breasts, because she was a minor and she didn’t have any “legal power”. Courtney posted:
I was 17 years old in this photo. The older I get, the more impossible this is to understand. During this comedy sketch, Jason Alexander repeatedly rubbed his phone across my breasts while saying there was “no signal” in my head but “plenty of signal” in my chest. Later in the sketch, he joked that when I turned 18 he’d like to take me behind the couch and “have his way” with me. IMDb credits him as one of the writers of the episode. As an adult, that fact has become harder—not easier—for me to understand. I was a minor. I didn’t have the legal power to decide whether I wanted to participate. The contracts were signed by adults. The paycheck went to Doug. The production moved forward. I was the only child in the room.

Looking back now, I don’t see comedy. I see a 17-year-old girl whose body became part of an adult joke. People still say, “You chose to be there.” Legally, I couldn’t make those decisions for myself. That’s the point. I can’t change what happened to me but I can ask myself: How did so many adults look at a minor and decide this was acceptable? [...]
Per TMZ, Jason Alexander apologized to Courtney by stating: "Looking back at the comedy sketch in which Ms. Stodden and I participated in 2012, I completely agree that it was inappropriate and I truly regret it."

Rhetorical question: Would Courtney condone having her breasts rubbed by Jason Alexander if she were 18?

November 1, 2013: Celebrity Big Brother and The First Split

A few months after Courtney appeared on Celebrity Big Brother and after almost three years of marriage, Courtney and Doug separated. Courtney shared with E! News that their age-gap was the main cause of the separation. Courtney said, “When I was 16, I got my marriage license instead of my driver’s license, come on!” However, less than a year later, Courtney and Doug were back together, and they made plans to renew their vows.

2015–2016: Sex Tape

In May of 2015, Vivid Entertainment released Courtney Uncovered: The Courtney Stodden Sex Tape, which was a solo sex tape made by Courtney “for charity” in which by then-20-year-old Courtney engaged in explicit auto-stimulation.

May 2016: The Vow Renewal and Pregnancy

In May of 2016, Courtney announced that she was four weeks pregnant and that to celebrate their fifth anniversary, she and Doug would have a vow renewal; however, Courtney lost the baby.
2016–2020: The Final Split

Courtney and Doug separated again in 2016, and signed divorce papers in March 2018. Consequently, in January 2018, due to depression and anxiety, per A&E, Courtney, via an Instagram post, begged Doug “for [a] reconciliation, but their separation continued.”

In April 2019, Courtney shared with “BuzzFeed News that she was taking her time with the divorce because she still loved Hutchison.” Courtney shared:
“I know that I love him so much, and I think he’s also ingrained in me because I was 16,” she said. “He has his thumbprint all over my spirit, and that part is hard for me to grow out of. He’s in my identity. If he wasn’t the person he is, I would say absolutely he took advantage of me. But the situation was so unique, right or wrong.”
However, after almost nine years, their divorce was finalized in March 2020.

In their first interview after they were married, Courtney informed an ABC News reporter that she was a virgin when she married Doug and, consequently, God rewarded her with a gift, her soulmate Doug. Courtney said,
“I was a virgin when I married him. I knew that if I kept that I would really be blessed with a gift. And God did. He blessed me with my soul mate.”
However, in a more recent interview with ABC News (March 21, 2025) report “Courtney Stodden reflects on grooming claims and being a teen bride”, Courtney related that, although she was in love with Doug, it was only because he groomed her by making her feel happy and special.
Courtney, “When you’re in love and you're underage, you’re like, ‘Oh, this is my first love!’”

ABC News reporter, “Were you in love?”

Courtney, “I thought I was. I was in love with what he groomed me into believing was true [love]. And I was in love with feeling so happy. Feeling so special.”
Thus, it’s safe to infer that if Courtney were 18 and Doug made her feel so happy and so special, she would not have considered it to be grooming, which is intriguing considering the fact that, per Courtney’s mother, Doug: “offered to step away from Stodden until she was 18”.
